Study: Morbidly Obese Mothers Put Children at Greater Risk of Asthma

Did you know morbidly obese mothers put their children at greater risk of developing asthma?

A study, published in October 2011, covered over 129,000 mothers in Stockholm and their 189,000 children. It found that mothers who were very obese, or with a body mass index of 35 and over, had a 61% increased risk of their children developing asthma by the time they were between 8 and 10 years of age.

Results suggest that mothers who address their obesity and lose weight before having children reduce the risk of their children having asthma.

MSNBC has full coverage of the story.

Body mass index (BMI), which is based on height and weight, is simple estimate of body fat that is a good indicator of your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.

Body mass index calculations are often used to determine whether a person is overweight, obese, underweight or normal (see the BMI body mass index chart located below the calculator). It is designed for males and females from age 18 to age 65, but does have its limitations.

Thanks for the comment JhenC. Doc uses the Barix Clinic BMI Calculator and talked about it in a recent blog post "Are you a candidate for gastric banding?"
